A parcel of bushland at Enfield Memorial Park cemetery in Adelaide is to be turned into what is described as an environmentally-friendly grave site.
It will be South Australia’s first natural https://www.goldengooseshoesit.com/ burial site, when bodies are not treated with chemicals before being wrapped in a shroud or put in a biodegradable coffin.
Adelaide Cemeteries Authority CEO Eric Heapy says the first natural burial is expected before the end of the year at the site.
He says are just three other cemeteries in Australia offering the concept.
"Certainly over the last few years there’s been this growing demand," he said.
"I think globally the community becomes more environmentally sensitive and wish to contribute to lessening the carbon footprint on the earth and we’re seeing this growing demand from the market for more environmentally-sensitive funerals."
About 100 natural burial plots initially will be available and graves will be marked with a native tree rather than a headstone.
